1. Keep a carpet first aid kit with the following:
- Clean White Rags/Sponge.
- Laundry detergent – liquid and granular (dry).
- Oxygen bleach Like Oxyclean® (do not use chlorine bleach).
- Grease solvent – dry cleaning fluid or spot removers such as:
- Energine®
- Rubbing alcohol
- Turpentine
2. Keep carpet cleaning labels in the kit, and/or save a picture on your phone for quick reference.
3. Act fast – scrape or blot up all excess spills or blemishes.

5. Pre-treat – If instructions call for using water, use only lukewarm to avoid setting the stain. When using spot removal agents, be sure to pretest first in an inconspicuous area.
6. Sponge, but don’t scrub!
- Work lightly from the center to the edges.
- “Feather” the area by sponging edges irregularly.
- Blot any dampness and dry quickly to avoid creating rings.
What To Do For:
Greasy spills – Sponge gently with grease solvent or apply granular (dry) detergent.
Non-greasy spills – Sponge with solution of one teaspoon liquid detergent to one cup water. Do not use soap.
Animal stains – Sponge freely with cold water. Apply solution of three tablespoons white vinegar to one quart water. Then sponge with detergent suds and rinse.
Be Aware Of Chemicals In Your Cleaners:
Firstly, not all fabrics are cleaned the same way. Each fabric can be unique when it comes to care instructions. Carpet weaves fabrics together, including adhesives.
